Anticipated Book Releases of 2025
Every new release I want to read this year from fantasy to nonfiction and more
For a few years, I have kept a list of all my highly anticipated book releases that I update regularly to keep track of the books coming out that I would like to read. This year, my list consists of 21 books. These are not all of the 2025 books I have on my want-to-read list, just the ones I plan on reading this year. Since it is still early in the year, there are probably still other books coming out that I will end up reading this year but have not been announced to the public or I am not yet aware of. I have arranged the books in order of release date, starting with the most recent ones.

The Elders’ Quest by Erin Hunter
Release Date: Tuesday, January 7, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: As someone who has invested countless hours into reading literally every Warriors book out there, excluding some of the graphic novels, I feel somewhat obligated to continue reading every new book that is released. The Elders’ Quest is the first book in a new story arc called Changing Skies and will be told from the perspectives of Tawnypelt, a senior ShadowClan warrior, Leafstar, the SkyClan leader, and Moonpaw, a ThunderClan apprentice. I am really curious to see what the story will be like with two of the protagonists as much older cats than has ever been done in a main series book before. Hopefully, this one will be good because of that!
Official Book Synopsis:
As Leafbare approaches, a new danger threatens the Clans. Twoleg construction has encroached on Clan territory, poisoning the stream and making prey especially scarce for SkyClan. Meanwhile, their leader, Leafstar, is struggling with a loss of vision while trying to maintain authority over a Clan that increasingly doubts her ability to lead.
In ShadowClan, Tawnypelt senses peril as the Twoleg construction threatens the Moonpool, but she can't get anycat, especially her son, Tigerstar, to listen. Frustrated with the younger cats who don't respect her, she decides to take matters into her own paws.
In the midst of the chaos, Moonpaw, an apprentice struggling to understand the mysterious voice in her head, thinks that she might be having visions. But the voice becomes increasingly sinister, and Moonpaw wonders if it's a sign of darkness on the horizon.
Happy Lies by Melissa Dougherty
Release Date: Tuesday, January 28, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: I have been a subscriber to Melissa Dougherty’s YouTube channel for over three years and have learned much from her videos. This book is the first she has written and I am really curious to learn more about the New Thought movement from someone who has studied it in depth. The topic is not something I know much about but I think it is important for Christians to learn about things like this to learn how to combat anti-biblical ideas.
Official Book Synopsis:
In this groundbreaking book, popular apologist Melissa Dougherty helps us understand how our society got to be so toxically subjective, why endless positivity is inherently destructive, and how we can live with faithful truth and genuine love in these self-obsessed times.
Have you ever wondered how we ended up in a world where personal feelings could become the authority for reality? Or why so many of us are on a relentless pursuit for happiness yet somehow feel more exhausted and sadder than ever? You're not alone.
Melissa deftly traces the roots of today's social chaos back to a little-known (but very influential) 1800s philosophy known as New Thought. A former follower of its teachings, Melissa provides clarity and compassion mixed with a dash of loving snark as she exposes New Thought's deceptions and its many concerning tendrils within the church and our "self-help" culture.
You'll be shocked, grieved, and encouraged as you learn:
How you can experience true freedom, hope, and peace instead of the world's counterfeits
How an anti-God ideology so easily hijacked Christian-sounding ideas
Why thinking positively is entirely different from the unbiblical and burdensome "positive thought" movement
Why fake "authenticity" short-circuits real redemption
How understanding the New Thought mindset can help us share our faith more effectively
Uncover a dangerous ideology that nearly everyone has met, yet few of us can name, in order to better understand our culture and joyfully live faithful to the gospel that is so much better than our world's Happy Lies.
The Happy Writer by
Release Date: Tuesday, January 28, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: Are there two books I would like to read coming out on exactly the same day that both have the word “happy” in the title? Absoloutely yes. You see, I happen to have read every Marissa Meyer book, excluding the two graphic novels and anthology, so I am kind of a big fan. This is her first nonfiction book, and I am really looking forward to reading something a bit different from one of my all-time favourite authors. It is about writing and being a writer, so as someone who obviously writes this very Substack publication and would like to write at least one novel at some point in my life, reading this could be helpful for me by providing me with some advice from a successful author. Plus, the title is taken from the name of her podcast, which I happen to enjoy listening to!
Official Book Synopsis:
If you aren’t suffering, you aren’t creating. Right?
Wrong!
Writing can and should be joyful, fulfilling… even fun! Applicable to writers in all genres and disciplines―from screenwriters to novelists, journalists to picture book authors, aspiring to many-times published―The Happy Writer is a heartfelt and optimistic guide that will show you the way to a happier writing journey.
Part craft guide, part writing coach, and part cheerleader, this book offers useful advice on a slew of common writing and publishing ailments, such as how to end procrastination, how to build a social media platform that reflects your personality, how to get your imagination to overflow with new ideas, how to listen to your intuition when receiving a critique on your work, how to overcome impostor syndrome, what to do when you’re stuck in the query trenches, and so much more.
No matter where a writer might be on their creative journey, Meyer encourages them to tap into their own personal sources of joy and to celebrate every milestone, all while confronting challenges (writer’s block! rejection! burnout!) with a reservoir of resources for every temperament, budget, and career.
Known in writers’ circles as a generous mentor, Meyer shares stories from her own writing path to help every writer discover the ultimate joys of living their best writing life.
March
The Gorgon’s Fury by Brandon Mull
Release Date: Tuesday, March 4, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: Tales of Newel & Doren is the third series in Brandon Mull’s Fablehaven universe, along with the original series and Dragonwatch, both of which I have read. The Gorgon’s Fury is the first book of this new series and follows the chaotic satyrs Newel and Doren, who are quite… interesting characters. I would love to read this book as well as some of Brandon Mull’s other books that I have not gotten around to reading yet because I greatly enjoy reading nearly anything in the realm of middle-grade fantasy.
Official Book Synopsis:
#1 New York Times best-selling author Brandon Mull returns to Fablehaven with a brand-new story starring the comedic satyrs, Newel and Doren, and their battle against a gorgon.
Satyrs Newel and Doren are maturing into more responsible citizens after helping put an end to the dragon rebellion. But the thought of growing out of adolescence has the two goatmen in crisis mode. If that isn’t enough to worry about, a few unlucky inhabitants of Fablehaven have been found petrified, turned to stone, including fellow satyrs. Could this new threat be the workings of a dangerous gorgon?
Newel and Doren become intrigued after an informant divulges information about a legendary Listening Doll—a talisman with the power to reveal the antidote for any magical malady—hidden somewhere in the Florida swamplands. If the mystical doll can solve any problem, maybe she has the answer of how to turn back the clock, so they won’t have to grow up.
Perhaps a trip to Florida is just what Newel and Doren need to get their mojo in time to win the annual Satyr Games. Two new challengers, Barrett and Hoff, are talking smack about dethroning Newel and Doren as perennial champions. And the new opponents have a smartphone!
Finding the Listening Doll and saving Fablehaven is important, sure. But Newel and Doren are also desperate for a smartphone of their own. Let the adventure and the games begin!
Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins
Release Date: Tuesday, March 18, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: So, I think this goes without saying, but I love The Hunger Games. Those books were the first young adult books I ever read, as well as the first dystopian ones. I watched all of the four original Hunger Games movies and may have even reviewed the movie for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes on Substack over a year ago.1 Given all that, I will obviously read any new book from this series that comes out. Sunrise on the Reaping takes place during the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, also known as the second Quarter Quell, in which double the amount of tributes were selected to participate. Its protagonist is none other than Haymitch, one of the only tributes from District 12 who won the games and is a a character that appears in the original trilogy. However, that is not to say I have no reservations about this book. Haymitch’s story is a very dark one and it does not end on a positive note. With that being said, I do hope that this book is done well despite the heavy subject matter. The post below shares some of my concerns about this book, for those who are interested.
Official Book Synopsis:
When you've been set up to lose everything you love, what is there left to fight for?
As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.
Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.
When Haymitch's name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He's torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town.
As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he's been set up to fail. But there's something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.
Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green
Release Date: Tuesday, March 18, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: Confession time: Despite being a member of Nerdfighteria, the online community sounding Hank and John’s YouTube videos, I have never in my life read a John Green book. Despite the massive popularity of his books, their genre is mainly young adult contemporary, generally with a large focus on romance, and based on what I have heard about these books, I do not think I would vibe well with them. Everything is Tuberculosis, on the other hand, is a nonfiction book about, well, tuberculosis. Yes, the disease, and no, it is not something that only famous 19th-century writers were infected with. John Green has had a bit (okay, maybe more than a bit) of an obsession with tuberculosis over the past few years, and he has gotten many people around the world, including myself, to care about this now-curable infectious disease that people are still dying of. I know that this book will teach me a lot, and I must admit, I just like listening to John Green ramble about things he is passionate about, whether it is on vlogbrothers, Crash Course, Dear Hank and John, or somewhere else. And hey, since he is signing an absurd number of cards to be put in these books, I may or may not have found myself unable to resist pre-ordering a signed copy.
Official Book Synopsis:
John Green, the #1 bestselling author of The Anthropocene Reviewed and a passionate advocate for global healthcare reform, tells a deeply human story illuminating the fight against the world’s deadliest disease.
Tuberculosis has been entwined with humanity for millennia. Once romanticized as a malady of poets, today tuberculosis is a disease of poverty that walks the trails of injustice and inequity we blazed for it.
In 2019, John Green met Henry, a young tuberculosis patient at Lakka Government Hospital in Sierra Leone while traveling with Partners in Health. John became fast friends with Henry, a boy with spindly legs and a big, goofy smile. In the years since that first visit to Lakka, Green has become a vocal and dynamic advocate for increased access to treatment and wider awareness of the healthcare inequities that allow this curable, treatable infectious disease to also be the deadliest, killing 1.5 million people every year.
In Everything is Tuberculosis, John tells Henry’s story, woven through with the scientific and social histories of how tuberculosis has shaped our world and how our choices will shape the future of tuberculosis.

Release Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: I have read every prior book in the Bamboo Kingdom series, and this is the final one. It will be nice to get to the end of these characters’ stories, as I have been reading each book as they are released.

Untitled by Kaelyn Hamm
Release Date: supposedly sometime in March 2025
Why I Want to Read it: This is the third book in the Singers trilogy and I have read the other two books. I loved both of them so I am quite certain it will become one of my favourite series. Plus, I will probably get to ARC read this book like I did with the second one.
Official Book Synopsis: not yet available :(
April
The Storm Singer by Sarwat Chadda
Release Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: The Storm Singer is an upcoming release from the Rick Riordan Presents imprint. I have read another middle-grade fantasy series by this author, The Adventures of Sik Aziz, which I liked significantly, so I was immediately curious when this one was announced. It seems like a fun mix of fantasy and mythology (with a disabled protagonist, too!), which is the sort of thing I happen to love reading.
Official Book Synopsis:
Skandar and the Unicorn Thief meets One Thousand and One Nights in this thrilling middle grade fantasy from Rick Riordan Presents author Sarwat Chadda about a girl with the magical power to control the elements with her song.
In a land ruled by fierce winged warriors known as eagle garudas, twelve-year-old Nargis is just a poor, lowly human, a Worm who hates the garudas that killed her parents. But even though she can’t fly—and her childhood attempt left her walking with a crutch—she is far from powerless. Nargis is a spirit able to coax small bits of wind, water, fire, and earth to do her bidding through song…well, sometimes.
When Nargis loses control of her power in a high-stakes kite fight, she is exiled. Cast into the desert, she discovers Mistral, an injured boy who turns out to be an eagle garuda, the prince of her enemies! He’s on a mission to take back his throne from a terrible vulture garuda. In spite of their mutual distrust, the two have no choice but to forge an unlikely alliance if they want to escape the desert alive.
And as Nargis and Mistral battle dangerous assassins, befriend crafty sky pirates, and sneak into the mysterious sky castle of Alamut, Nargis discovers she carries a family secret, one that could bring Monsoon’s rains back to the desert, but only if she’s willing to risk her life in the bargain…
Reliquary of the Dead by David A. Falk
Release Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: The author of this book, Dr. David Falk, is an Egyptologist and has the YouTube channel Ancient Egypt and the Bible, which is my favourite channel. His other book, The Ark of the Covenant in its Egyptian Context, is a wonderful nonfiction book and after reading it, I waited in anticipation for him to announce another book, though I did not expect it to be fiction! I had to look up the word “reliquary,” as I was not previously familiar with it. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Engish (AKA the best English dictionary), it means “a container for holy relics,” and I quite like the word! Anyway, this is the first book in an adult science fiction series set in 25th-century Egypt, which sounds super interesting to me. I am really looking forward to experiencing this book as it does not sound like anything I have ever read!
Official Book Synopsis:
Pierre Gulet, an eccentric and uniquely intuitive French archaeologist, is living in 25th century Egypt but is fixated on the past. After centuries, Egypt is still Egypt-the pyramids, the donkey carts, the unfinished high rises, the rancid stench of garbage, the systemic corruption. Pierre was excavating the find of a lifetime, a pre-dynastic temple beneath an Old Kingdom fortress, until he was called into the office of the Director of Antiquities who takes away his life's work, blacklists him, and drives him into exile onto a distant world, a small colony struggling for survival on the edge of outer space.
Pierre must now solve a mystery that has baffled traditional scientists for decades, an agricultural blight that has decimated the food supply of a colony on Gliese 832 c. Driven by a desire to make a discovery no one can take away from him, he must use his unique skills to save the future of a planet that is on the precipice of disaster. But as he seeks to uncover the truth, he is opposed by intransigent colonists, jealous predecessors, and an ancient power lurking deep in the earth. The more he discovers, the more he is vilified, and the more determined he becomes to discover what is at the heart of the blight. Should he fail, everyone in the colony dies.
The Infinite Glade by James Dashner
Release Date: Tuesday, April 22, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: The Maze Runner is a popular young adult dystopian series I have read, along with the first two books in its sequel series, The Maze Cutter. This one is the third book of that series, and, as I enjoyed the other books, I will also be reading this.
Official Book Synopsis:
The Infinite Glade is the final book of The Maze Cutter series, resolving long-unanswered questions of The Maze Runner world. When Newt's journal is decoded, long-buried secrets of the past come to light and the group of descendants along with Old Man Frypan are forced to choose between risking their lives to share the painful truth of the evolving maze trials with the world, or escaping the chaos with their lives and letting the deepest darkest of secrets stay buried in The Glade forever.

The Light in Our Eyes by
Release Date: Tuesday, May 20, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: I have been subscribed to the author’s Substack for some time and was intrigued when I heard he has a book coming out soon. As an evangelical Christian who has questioned and abandoned some of the theological beliefs I was raised with, the topic sounds interesting to me. Furthermore, I have never read a book about this sort of thing before so I am interested to see what it is like. It does seem like it is mainly written for an American audience, given the description, but I do think people from other countries could probably benefit from this book too.
Official Book Synopsis:
For the millions who have felt disillusioned with American evangelical culture, this book is a lifeline for navigating the cynicism of both conservative and progressive beliefs to find real hope in the life and mission of Jesus.
As a pastor and author, Nicholas McDonald spent years helping people work through serious questions about the evangelical church’s gospel and its often hurtful responses to those confused by American Evangelical culture. He quickly realized that what these people needed—what he really needed—was not merely apologetics answers but the good news that speaks to their deepest love, beauty, and freedom—the very things Jesus promises to those who follow Him.
With excellent storytelling and profound insights from his own deconstruction journey, McDonald compassionately addresses the concerns so many readers have with the evangelical subculture’s sense of entitlement, nostalgia, and cynicism. And he outlines a clear path to finding restoration in Jesus. The Light in Our Eyes offers nine ancient practices to help you experience anew—or for the first time—Jesus’s love, beauty, and freedom and to embody and extend them in the world. Through the scriptural song of Zechariah and relatable, inspiring stories of men and women who have been restoried by the gospel of Jesus, this book reminds us that Jesus’ dreams fulfill what our hearts have longed for all along.
Journey from despair and darkness to faith and light as McDonald outlines a path to becoming reenchanted by the dreams Jesus has for each one of us, the church, and the world. To take up His dream is the invitation to believe again, and to hope again.

Roswell Johnson Saves the Galaxy! by Chris Colfer
Release Date: Tuesday, June 3, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: I read the first book in this series last year and had a great time with it, so I will obviously read the sequel. It is a middle-grade science fiction series by one of my favourite authors that follows a kid who tries to convince everyone he knows that aliens are real until he gets abducted by them. The first one was super funny and I have high hopes for this book!
Official Book Synopsis:

But, along the way, Roswell discovers new technology that could put our solar system in grave danger. Can he save not just the world, but the entire galaxy?
We Could Be Magic by
Release Date: Monday, June 23, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: When I first heard about this book, I did not think I would read it. You see, I am not a graphic novel kind of person. They feel sort of like cheating to me, and honestly, I prefer having wordy descriptions of things.2 However, I just could not not read an upcoming release from my favourite young adult author. And anyway, the last time I actually read a graphic novel was in 2018, so perhaps I should give this style of book another try. It does sound really cute though, and despite my pickiness concerning romance in books, romance written by Marissa Meyer never fails to impress me.
Official Book Synopsis:
A swoon-worthy young adult graphic novel about a girl's summer job at a theme park from #1 New York Times bestselling author Marissa Meyer.
When Tabitha Laurie was growing up, a visit to Sommerland saved her belief in true love, even as her parents’ marriage was falling apart. Now she’s landed her dream job at the theme park’s prestigious summer program, where she can make magical memories for other kids, guests, and superfans just like her. All she has to do is audition for one of the coveted princess roles, and soon her dreams will come true.
There’s just one problem. The heroes and heroines at Sommerland are all, well… thin. And no matter how much Tabi lives for the magic, she simply doesn't fit the park's idea of a princess.
Given a not-so-regal position at a nacho food stand instead, Tabi is going to need the support of new friends, a new crush, and a whole lot of magic if she’s going to devise her own happily ever after. . . without getting herself fired in the process.
With art by Joelle Murray, the wonder of Sommerland comes to life with charming characters and whimsical backdrops. We Could Be Magic is a perfect read for anyone looking to get swept away by a sparkly summer romance.
Silverborn by Jessica Townsend
Release Date: Tuesday, June 24, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: You may remember that I had this very book on my anticipated book releases post last year. But it seems like it will finally be coming out in June and I am glad about that! Silverborn is the fourth book in the quite popular middle-grade fantasy series Nevermoor which I read last March. These books follow the adventures of a girl named Morrigan Crow and have such a fun and whimsical setting and magic system that I fell in love with. It will be so nice to experience more of this series!

The House Saphir by
Release Date: Tuesday, November 4, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: So… I have three books on this list by the same author. This is fine. I’m okay with the events that are unfolding currently. BUT MARISSA MEYER HAS ANOTHER RETELLING COMING OUT. And there is absolutely no way I am going to miss out on this one. It is a retelling of “Bluebeard,” a French folktale that I had never heard of before. I read that story after finding out about this book (you can find it online) and I am really curious to see how the events of that story show up here.

Tailored Realities by Brandon Sanderson
Release Date: Tuesday, December 9, 2025
Why I Want to Read it: I happen to be working my way through reading all of Brandon Sanderson’s published books, which is going to take a while. As this one is not in the Cosmere or part of a series it does not matter when I read it so I figured sooner is better than later! Tailored Realities contains several novellas, which I do not think I have read any of.
Official Book Synopsis:
Spanning the genres of fantasy and science fiction, this collection features stories from beyond the bounds of Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere universe.
Along with the never-before-seen novella 'Moment Zero', Tailored Realities will include 'Snapshot', 'Perfect State', 'Defending Elysium' (a novella set within the world of Skyward), and five other stories that were originally published individually elsewhere - never before collected into one volume, and many never before available in print.
The collection will also include a stunning black-and-white illustration for each story.

Face to Face by
Release Date: supposedly sometime in 2025
Why I Want to Read it: This is the sequel to Broken Bonds, a book I read last year that presents a fictional account of the events of the Protestant Reformation from the perspectives of three central characters. I loved that one and am so looking forward to reading this whenever it comes out!
Official Book Synopsis: not yet available :(
Untitled by Rick Riordan and Mark Oshiro
Release Date: supposedly sometime in 2025
Why I Want to Read it: This as-of-yet untitled book is the sequel to The Sun and the Star and is part of the ever-expanding Riordanverse. It is a middle-grade fantasy book with heavy inspiration from Greek mythology and is related to the Percy Jackson books but has different protagonists. The series in this bookish universe have been hugely impactful to me, so I will read any and all new books.
Official Book Synopsis: not yet available :(
Those are all of the 2025 releases I would like to read this year. Leave a comment letting me know what books you are most looking forward to and if any of these are on your list. Happy reading!
No, I’m not linking it here. I wrote it over a year ago and it’s probably embarrassing. Find it yourself if you so wish.
I do not mean to offend anyone who loves graphic novels. Reading graphic novels is obviously still reading!
Book 2 of the "War of the Gods" series (sequel to the "Reliquary of the Dead") is scheduled to come out in July 2025.
If you find out the release date for Face to Face, let me know. ; )
