I love these books! I agree that they are among the best ever written. I couldn't possibly pick a favorite! I like the language they used. The stories are not all about what happened but about the characters and for an introvert like me I find it infinitely interesting to look into a character's soul, which mirrors the human soul. I haven't read the Count of Monte Cristo yet but it is on my list - I did enjoy The Three Musketeers. I would also recommend Henry James who wrote a lot of really good novels like The Portrait of a Lady and Washington Square. I'm not a big Dickens fan, but I agree with Melody that Bleak House is stellar! I also enjoy Nathanial Hawthorne's writing, particularly The House of the Seven Gables. Happy reading and thanks for sharing this with us!

So many of my favorites are on here! I really love Wives & Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell and Middlemarch by George Eliot, and my favorites by Charles Dickens are Bleak House and Little Dorrit. All four of those are quite long, but I advocate for reading 19th century literature in installments like the original audience did. A newish discovery for me is George MacDonald's fairy tales. His narrative voice is such fun (you can tell the stories were first heard by his 11 children!) and the magic is palpable.
